Alchemy Tiles

al·che·my (noun) – “any seemingly magical process of transmuting ordinary materials

into something of true merit.

Using clay as a medium, Alchemy Tiles carries poetry and inspiring quotes to become a constant visual presence in our lives. The tiles can decorate walls, floors, parts of furniture, read-as-you-go footpaths and fountains – “a thing of beauty” indoors or outdoors.

The journey of each and every tile…

1) Each tile is individually rolled and hand cut from a slab of clay.
2) It is then hand carved with fine hooped tools with inspiring quotes, poems and images.
3) The tile is then inlaid with 4 different shades of slip (runny clay with oxides and stains added for colour) to create a marble effect of colours.
4) Once the slip has dried the tile is then scrape back to reveal the image and script underneath.
5) The tile is left to dry thoroughly dry and then is glazed with a clear crackle glaze before being fired raw slowly over 3 days.
6) Once the tile leaves the kiln it is washed over with a stain to highlight the grazing effect of the glaze.
The tiles can be made using standard sizes below or they can be made to measure.
Commissions are always welcome and make a perfect bespoke gift for any occasion. Kitchen back splashes and bathrooms can also be designed for. Star Sign tiles can be designed to include birth dates, specific images, names and the personality qualities of the star sign.
